WINTER RACING

WELLINGTON MEETING THE SECOND DAY GANG AWA' WINS THE STEEPLECHASE The Wellington Racing Club was again favoured with glorious weather yester--day for the second day of it's winter meeting. Despite the fact that it was regarded as somewhat-of an off day, the attendance seemed quite as large as on the opening day, and the investments on the totalizator showed an appreciable increase. This can be put down to the fact that the 10s. machine was in operation on the inside. In contrast to the opening (lay, the results were more in favour of backers of the favourite, and, four of the public fancies rolled home 'during the afternoon, whilst Signature, llineamaru. and' Gang Awa' were also he'avily supported. The totalisator put through a sum of ,137,237, which was an increase of JC2OGS on the opening day of the meeting. Last vear. when only a two-day meeting was held, the investments on the second <jay amounted to .£57,1157 10s -

In the big Steeplechase Gang Awa', who is a-stable-mate of Master Strowan, made a very fast race of it, and led from end to'end. He had the favourite tarrying his big weight the whole -way, and this prevented the Lupin gelding from'putting much (lash into it at the finish.

Gold Kip. who was a good favourite in the .Fleet Handicap, was generally held tn bo unlucky, but though he got off badly. Pnddinglou Green was worse servel in this direction.

Movement, Gang Awa', Munster, and Hairusdale declined their engagement in the Hack Hurdles, and Orleans again started favourite. . A rank outsider in Cvra made the running for a mile, with Wild Pilgrim and Tigorlaml at the head of the others. Across the bottom Signature moved up, and he and Wild Pilgrim took off at the last' fence together, but the Dnnerlin horse stumbled, and though lie recovered ijuickly the advantage Signature gained won him the race. Tuticorn was close up third, and then came Tigerland. The favourite cut up badly, and Gold Soult stood on the mark and took no part in .the race.

Coment, Hiero, Orawia. and Scasprite were missing from (he Liverpool Handicap, liebekah was a good favourite, and stripped ■ remarkably well. She drew the inside, and began smartly. In the st-nHtr, she was hard pushed to stall off Parisian Diainpnd. Gazique, and Form ITp, but. the mare held her own and won by a bare'length. Gazique was a neck •»way in third place, and then c;>me Form Up'. The top weights had the r,.ce practically tn themselves. OrleiinV and Signature, who had ioced earlier in the day, and Yankee Jack were the sera tellings for the Jumpers' Flat Handicap. Cynic was a pood favourite, and though he was slow to move he won very easily at the finish. Mann and Movement led out nf the straight, but going past the mile Sweet Tipperary took chp.rge and led into the straight. Here Cynic ran to the lead, and in the straight ho won very easily. Want finished well and beat Sweet Tipperary for second plaoe. Movement was fourth. Mullive shaped very badly. Comment, Glenroy, Merrie Poto. and Daytime was the order of favourittsm in tho Selling Race. The favourite landed the stnke. but. it was only after a very close finish. Tronthnm Roso led a bunched field till well down the (straight, where Comment and Poste Haste challenged. Slicks were used on the trio, and in a close finish the favourite got l the verdict V a head. Trentham Rose was half a lenrth away, .end Daytime was close up. The winner was sold for 183 guineas to Mr B. Pearson. Troublesome forfeited his engagement, in the Brooklyn Steeples, for which Master Lupin '.started a hot favourite. At the start: Gang Awa'. and Merrie Lad led. but the forme" soon ran to the front, and. iumning well, ho was not rgain headed. With a mile to go'the favourite and Merrie Lad were within striking distance, but. the lender. held his,-own, nnd, jumping well, ho was not caught. He passed the post a winner by six leniths. while the other pair.ran a deadheat. .Graftelliv was the only other to finish. ' Polthogue lost his rider at, tho water-jump, and Vacuum refused at tho post and vails. The winner's performance was full of merit, as ho made all his own running, and pulled up as '"ell as anything in the race. Canzonet was a good favourite in tho Peninsula Handicap, and, taking charge at the barrier rise, the Bezonian gelding led from end to end. Tame Fox finished on well, and got second place from Sacramento. Kyoto. Rangi ' Aroha, nnd Imaribbon were close up. The winner ran a much better rac£ to-day, ami the public evidently anticipated the improvement. The performance was officially queried. The inquiry stands adjourned till Saturday. The seventeen acceptors all started in the Fleet Handicap. Gold Kip was favourite; and Athens II was next choice. The* start was a poor one, Mandrake, Ptiddington Green, and Crosswords getting badly away, as did the favourite. When the field into gone a furlong, Damien, Potentiality, and Tirana were in the lead, with Alteration at the head of the others. At the five furlongs Potentiality and Damien were clear of Kilkee and Gold Kip: The.two leaders were well clear at the bottom of the straight, but,a furlong from home Kilkee took, charge, and he ran in a comfortable winner. Paddinglon Green finished strongly on the fence, and got second place, while tlio favourite was a neck sway, and then same Pretty Bobby, Alteration, and Client.

There was a big pool :n the concluding event. Happy Valley, Hallow, Hineamarn, nnd Tempo all being well supported. The Auckland-owned filly was soon in front, and she won.'all the way. Over the last furlong her rider was sitting perfectly still, while the others were "being liard ridde;i. Tempo got within a length of her at the finish, and Sunburst was Hie same distance away. Hallow shaped very badly, nnd was one of the last to finish. The winner is a good class filly, and more will be heard of her. DETAILS OF THE RACING.
