Sir James Allen said yesterday that the Government regretted to have to make the prohibition, but the coal could not be spared for the nonessential purpose while'it was eo urgently needed for domestic fuel and industrial and transport purposes. The only illuminations permitted anywhere would be in 'places where the power was not coal produced.' ,
CELEBRATIONS AT KARORI..The' secretary of the, Karori Peace Celebration' Committee (Mr. John Burns) reports that the'arrangements are almost complete for the children's day on July 21.. It is intended that the children shall meet" at the school at 9.30. when the school honours board • will bo unveiled by M?. R. A. Wright, M.P. Sometime ago tho Gear Meat Company commenced the building of 'an 'arch opposite' ■" their premises in Jackson''' I 'Street? This is. now ; being completed, and another arch is being erected near the Council Clamber in Jackson- Street. The town is to bo gaily decorated with flags and evergreens, and it is considered that the display, in Petohe will .be one of the finest yet seen. ' Tho display at Lower Hutt will also foe one worthy of the occasion. The 6ecre- , tary of the Lower Hutt Peace Committee reported on Tuesday evening that £27 had.been.spent on flags and £50 on fireworks. The bonfire is to be erected on Normandalo Hill, and the local Fire ■■' Brigade will undertake the letting off of 1 the fireworks. "'.'...■; PEACE HOLIDAYS. The Government has decided to proclaim Saturday, July 19, and 'Monday. July 21, the days of Peace celebrations, to be 'public holidays.
