DEFEATED BY THE PIG
REAL REASON WHY GERMANY LOST THE WAR, The real reason (or at least one of the reasons) why Germany threw up the sponge and signed the armistice terms is nt last revealed in a story which comes tu England via Denmark (says the London "Daily News"). It seems that it was the German pig that defeated German ambition. Just as surely as Waterloo wa6 won on the playing fields of Eton, so the great European war was lost for Germany in the pigstyes of the Fatherland.
This is the theory of the distinguished Danish vegeterian, Dr. M. Hindhcde, who according to the "British Medical Journal" has published a paper purporting to prove that "the German system of rationing broko down over the pig and other domestic animals. The Gorman pig betrayed the Fatherland, and contributed more to Germany's downfall than tho Allies' blockade."
At tho outbreak of the war tho food problem was more serious in Denmark than in Gorniany. Donmark, however, reduced the numbers of her cattle and pigs, and restricted the consumption of cereals in the country. Germany, on the other hand, instead of reducing the numbers of her cnttlo and pigs, forbade the slaughtering of cattle under seven years old, and of pigs less than 00 kilos in weight. No restrictions were nut on feeding them with cereals.
By 4 the spring of 191 ft there was scarcely a potato left in Germany. Professor Zunlz. of Berlin, had the courage at this s-'lnac to urge tho slaughter of pigs, ev»n if their enrcasses had to bo left on the dunghill. In 1017 Professor Ballot! candidly assured his countrymen that they were themselves doing more lo reduce their rations than the English. So Germany starved while Denmark throve, and the pigs ale tho fond that: her human population so urgently needed, and thereby brought about her collapse.
