ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society was hold on Wednesday in the society's office. M v - L. 0. H. Tripp presided, and there were present Messrs. F. Whitley, E. J. CWiffin, L. Powell, W. H. Field, M.P., J. S. Fleming, and J. Brassel-Secd It was seated that the society would have about 1,300,000 fry to distribute this season. The society is receiving 300,000 from Hakataramea, 250,000 from Otago, 200,000 from Rotorua, and there are 550,000 at Masterton..
Mr. Walter Adrian Langley, settler, of Ob.au, it was reported, had 'been appointed honorary ranger at the request of t'ho society. s The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the regulations issued in 1918, prescribing the conditions under which red deer may bo destroyed in parts of the -Wellington acclimatisation district, for revision.
Mr. W. Charlesworth, of Masterton, wrote suggesting that it would bo advisable to havo a. couple of close seasons for game on the Wairarapa lake. Tho wrrttfr complained that several sportsmen were shooting ducks and swans in great numbers now.
The secretary of the .Huntorville branch wrote slating that it was the opinion uf anglers in tho district that the fishing season opens in the district too early by a month; It was slated that in October many of the fish had not spawned and others hud only just spawned, and this applied particularly to tho brown trout, although the rainbow trout could only be classed as fair.
The secretary reported that a stag had been imported from Otago and had- arrived in Wellington in good condition, and been sent on to the game farm. The secretary further stated that the freightage on the animal was .£4 2s. 9d., and 10s. was paid to a member of the crow for looking after the stag. The freight worked out"at about ils. 9d. per hour for every hour the stag was on board the steamer coming up from Lyttelton.
Mr. J. 6. Miller, curator of the Mas* terton ponds, reported that the season had been a good one for trapping in the Waipoua River. He stated that he had already secured 550,000" ova. Mr. Miller expressed.the opinion that if it were the intention of the society 'to continue to collect ova in tho Waipoua Eivcr it would "be necessary to regularly stock it each season. The following were appointed tho Fishing Committee:—Messrs. S. G. Nathan, F. Whitley, E."J. C. Wiffin, L. Powell, J. S. Fleming, and Seed,' and the following were appointed to act as Ihe committee :-Mcssvs. L. O. H. Tripp, W. H. Field, E. J. C. Wiffin, F. Dyer, J. Erasse], and L. Powell. '■
