Contain J. Alcock, D.5.0., who, with ■Lieutenant Brown, was the first airman to cross tho Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland, was third home in "The •Daily Mail". London-to-Manchester and bacfc flight of 1914. Ho was born in 1592 at Manchester, and received his tochnical engineering training at tho Empress Motor Works in the same city, 'faking his Royal Aero Club's iflying. ' certificate at ißrooklands in 1912, ho 1 rapidly rose to a leading place in the pro- ■\ fession, and took part in manv early competition flights. At the outbreak of V war he joined the 8.N.A.5., as instructor, working at Eastchurch with Mr. S.vd- '.- ney Tickles. Later ho became chief in- -, structor of the Acrobatic Squadron. Going to tho East, Captain Alcock did valuable work on the Turkish front, \ and held tho record for long-distance bombing. Engine failure led to his falling into.the hands of the Turks, and ho remained a prisoner until the end of the ' war. Lieutenant' Arthur Whitten Brown, A.M.1.E.. M.1.M.E., A.M.F.A.1.E., accompanied Captain Alcock as navigator. Ho w.is born in Glasgow in ISS6, and Ims parents were American citizens. His training as an engineer was received with the British IVestinghoiiso • Company, ■/which is now allied wt'v Tickers. LM. A thorough knowledge of surveying an<l interest in- aviation led to the study of. aerial navigation as applied to surveying ' In 1 9U Lieutenant Ttrown in the University ?nd Public School Cori".
