POLICE VAN SMASH
NARROW ESCAPE OP OFFICIALS,
Police officials travelling in a police van to the race meeting yesterday morning liad a narrow escape from injury. The van used was the large "Black Maria," and contained eleven representatives of the detective and uniformed branches, who were obliged to adopt this method of transport owing to the curtailment of the railway services. The van was in charge of Constable Ilollis, and when near Tiiita, it. collided with one of Messrs. M'Ewan and Carter's motor wagons, which was also proceeding in the direction of Trcntham. It. is stated that the police van attempted to get past Hip w'lvati' wagon, and through some misunderstanding, just as the van was :tt-U-inptiiig to pass, a collision took place. In endeavouring to avoid a serious sniusli tho vnn was'turned off the road, .t"' it then fell down a email incline. Now of the occupants suffered an> -iiij.,..., but the front axle of the. van was broken The police officials then, had to rely on the passing motorists for their transport to the racecourse. The van wns subsequently brought into Wellington for repairs.
