THE TERRACE TRAMWAY
QUESTION OF THE ROUTE.
What the route of the cars through the now fairly thickly-settled district ot Kelburu Central and West will bo cannot yet be stated, as it has not yet been definitely decided upon by the 'lrainways Committee or City Council. It is u (inestion of grave moment to tho city, and, as one likely to involve the city corporation in a vast sum—and with the state of the tramway finances in mind— this matter of tramway extension is likely to involvo prolonged and careful consideration. It is understood that the lramways Committee will almost at once recommend tho council to proceed with one section of the- proposed new tramline to the western uplands, viz., the bunding of a double tramway track (for a cable tramway), to rise from a point ndjoinins the Albert Hotel, in Upper Willis Street (a property in the cstato of the lato Sir William Fox and held on lease bv Mr. James M'Donald, of tho Albert. Hotel), to' Wellington Terrace, at a point a little to tho north of tho juuerinn of Mount Street' with the Terrace. I'ho route, which provides for a sloping wav for two lines cf counter-weighted cable curs, will bo fairly steep, but the proposal will be to provide horizontal seating accommodation on the cars, as is the- case with tho Mount Lowe cars (Los Aimries). Several properties will have, to bo acquired to secure a. track reserve between Willis Street and tho Terrace. It is yet a moot point whether the tramway should extend right m> to the level of the Terrace, or enter the hill Rt » lower point, mid, by menus of a tunnel, pass under the Terrace, and come out again in the gully below Salamanca l?oad and Victoria College. Aβ stated above, the route through Kelburn Central and West has yet to be decided, and that it is a knotty point has been proved by tho number of suggestions which have already been made. It is understood' that an extension of tlie tramway system to Northland is not considered by tiny means an urgent work nt present, as that suburb is fairly well served by the Karori care, In any caee, it is not likely that any definite stops m connection with the proposed new tram' wav undertaking will bo taken until after tho return of tho City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) from America and Europe in about threo or four months time.
Respecting the property in Upper Willis Street that it is proposed to acquire for a city station, it was recently announced that Mr. M'Donald had let a contract for a large brick building to cover the block. So far tho permit to luiild has not been issued by the City '.'cuncil.
