REDUCTION TN -NUMBER OF CONVICTIONS. Sydney, July L The annual report of the Comptroller Of Prisons shows that tho total number nf convicted prisoners received in the L'aols during the vear was (5077, being one, in every 1871 of the population—the lowest on record, and 30, i fewer than in the previous vear. The number of convictions in tho Police Courts during 1918 was 552(1, being 27(1 fewer than in 1017. tho principal cause of the decline is tho great improvement in the social and econoimo conditions of the people.—Press Assn.
