The number of reiumed soldiers on the Repatriation Department's register now ■totals 53,824; • This includes, 27,1511 men who have returned Ui the Dominion sincu the beginning of the year. Demobilisation curds are now held by the district :c----patrialion officers as follow:— Auckland, 8817; Wellington, 11,191 m Canterbury, JliO-1; Otago, SU7S. ToUl, 30,695. These figures include cards for sows .rati men who returned prior to 1919 ami have inquired regarding assistant* from the Department. Tlio reports show Hint already 591 loans, totalling „£131,4<i5. to assist di?> Charged soldiers to start in business have, been approved bv the Ministerial Hoard, and that during' the past mouth j»00fl was actually paid on behalf of soldier* in tlio wav of furniture, tools, business, sustenance', training fees, ■ subsidised wages,-assistance to Apprentices, etc. The total number of men at; present being trained bv the Department is Sl.t, and during the. month the Department secured billets for 821 men who applied for such assistance. A further 3-13 men sought, financial assistance to enable thou' to siurt in business, and .731 applied lor grants for furniture and tools of triwe. etc. The amounts being paid out by M various boards and committees slum- a large increase.
