CHEVRONS FOR WAR HORSES
. "Can your horse do it?" I put tho question to the driver of an old-fashioned four-wheeler' in a Cornish town. On the horse's harness were four blue chevrons, and my destination was at the top of a high hill. "If you don't mind walking the worst bit he can manage it nicely," said the driver. "He's a good beast; he was; in France with the Canadians through the woret of the fighting, pd I feel I owo him a little consideration."
Quite frankly, this is an appeal to all purobasers of war hoTee3 to eee that the proper chevrons are attaohod to tho harness. Easter meant the beginning of popular wagonette trips at seaside resorta, and tho pleasure-making of thoueanda of visitors who wanted an after, noon's outing by carriago or dog-cart. The men who are home from tho wars, ready to show visitors tho joys of- their special countryside, aro likely to give tho war horaos their due. They know what Franco meant. But not all the older men realiso what our horses suffered in warfare. Even fhoso with wider understanding are doubtful about asking passengers to "get out and walk." But if "Ned" showed his chevrons ho would make a silont appeal that would bo irresistible to any sporting Unglish man or woman. Only war horses will bo used very largely for pleasure purposes in. the coming months. They will set off very patiently with their burden of merrymakers. They will probably attenmt more than they do; but the hone who wears the Mona ribbon or a blue chevron will havo protection. For /io healthy holiday-maker with a pair of sturdy legs would knowingly be guilty of unkindness to a veteran of our wars.
And the glimpse of the badge of service will make an appeal from 'ho driver unnecessary. ... Wβ shall all get down and walk" when the roupji road approaches.—"B.D.," in tho "Daily Mail."
