ANGLICAN SYNOD

WORK OF ST. MARY'S HOMES

SUPPORT OF CHURCHMEN

NECESSARY

The. Wellington Diocesan Synod resumed its session yesterday, the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. T, H. Sprott) presiding.

Attention was devoted by synod to considerate of St. Mary's Homes, Karori. The Venerable Archdeucon A. M. Johnson , moved:—"That this synod expresses its thankfulness to Almighty God lor the work of St. Mary's Guild, and offers to the members its congratulations on the coming-of-age- of the guild, and commends the work of St. Mary's Homes to the thought, interest, and prayers of all'churchmen in tho diocese."

Mr. Johnson said that the three homes were now clear of debt, furnished and equipped with all that was necessary to bring home-life to girls who had no homes, or wero better away from tho liomes they had. The work of the homes was a double one. There was the work of rescue and the work of protection. St. Mary's were the only homes in" New Zealand, under private management, where girls wlio were wayward, wilful, and incorrigible were admitted, as well as those who had been contaminated by evil surroundings. Altogether, about 200 girls had passed through the homes. Careful contact had been kept with over 90 per cent. Twentyono years of the work was a proud record for the guild, and for the church of the diocese. The_ guild wanted help from all parts of the diocese, as the work was deserving of the strongest support of all church people. The Rev. C. H. Isaacson seconded the motion, whioh was carried.

The clerk to the'synod, the Rev. A. W. H. Compton, introduced a Bill to amend the Diocesan Pension Fund Act, 1800.

The Bill was read a first, time, and the second reading will be taken to-day.

Mr. R. AVilberfoss moved:—"That resolution No. 8 on. Pago 43 of Acts, Resolutions, and Standing Orders of this synod be deleted, and that the following be inserted in lieu thereof, viz.:—'The.synod hereby directs tho diocesan trustees to submit to an architect such plans as require their consent in terms of Canon 111, title F.'"

The mover Baid the present system with regard to the submission of plans to one architect was somewhat anomalous, and it was desirable that a. change should be mado. The trustees should have the right of submitting plans to any architect they thought fit.

Mr. S. W. Henderson said that if the resolution were adopted it would meau that the diocesan trustees would have power to approve of plans, whether tho diocesan architect favoured them or not. He opposed the resolution, considering that only the diocesan architect should be empowered to approvo of plans. It would be a reflection on tho diocesan architect if tho tni6tees adopted plans to which lie was opposed.

After some further discussion, the synod went into committee to consider tup matter.

Upon resuming in open synod, it was reported that the resolution had been amended in the following form:—"The synod hereby authorises the Standing Committee to appoint a diocesan architect, anii instruct the trustees to approve of no plan until it shall have been reparted'upon by such architect; and, that if the diocesan architect be the architect for any building the diocesan trustees have the power to submit euclr plans to any other architect for report.

The resolution as amended in committee was carried.

At 9.30 p.m. the synod adjourned until to-day,
