VOll Hindenburg, replying to a request by th& Minister for Defence for a statement of his attitude in view of the Entente's rejection of the German reservations, said: "If hostilities are resumed the Germans will Ire able to conquer the province of P'oseu and maintain tho frontiers in the East, but she could hardly reckon upon success in the/West A favourable issue therefore was very doubtful, but as a .soldier lie prefers an honourable fall to an ignominious peace." —Renter.
