QUEUE FOR COAL

OUTSIDE STATE COAL OFFICE,

Following upon the notice that fresh orders for coal would be received by the State Coal Department's local office, a rush set in to book up as soon as tho office in Lower Cuba Street was opened. So insistent was the crowd on getting into the' little office that the assistance ol' a police constable had to be procured to prevent people rushing the doors. At midday one of the staff and a stalwart policeman had all their work cut out to keep the coal-hungry crowd in order. Lnter on a queue—two abreast—was formed, which extended some considerable distance along the sidewalk. This state of things continued practically up to the time tho office closed for tho day. Orders will be taken again to-day.
