Latest advices received by the Union Company state that the It.M.S. Makura was expected to leavo Vancouver .on Saturday for Honolulu, Suva, and Auckland. This vessel arrived at the Canadian port on June 3, and was held up owing to tho labour strikes. The message received by the Union Company indicates that there Is every prospeee of a settlement of the labour troubles within a few days. After having been under water for-eight vcekn, states the "Herald,"' i.he Union Stoam Ship Company's coal-hulk No. 6 was. floated at Auckland last week, and berthed at tho Hobson WhaTf. Tho hulk sank' at her moorings oil' Shoal Bay on Easter Monday morning, with GOO tons of Coal on -board. Salvage operations were delayedfor 'some time owing to the necessary gcar ; having to be obtained from .Dunedin, and' to tho fact that the port was to busy that suflicicnt labour was not available. It is understood that tho work was the heaviest of its . kind ilono in New Zealand. The, under-water lift wa5.275 tons, and the total weight of the vessel and cargo about 1200 tons. Tho hulk was floated by two of the Harbour Board scows and two punts, two kauri logs, 66ft. loug and 3oiu.'in diameter.' aud each weighing nine tons, being lashed to the puuts.' Tho lifting was done by means of'six sijn. wire ropes placed under tho bottom of tho hulk, the ends being made fast to tho lifting vessels. Work was started on June 12. The wireß were tightened up at each low water, and as the tide. tho hulk was lifted and she was towed near tho beach. Seven lifts had to bo made before the vessel was high enough on tho beach to bo pumped ut. The strain on tho wire ropes during the lifting was such that the salvago vessels were submerged 2ft. 6in. below their N usual water-line. The Harbour Board's iirefloat pumped the hulk dry. The hulk .was not injured by tho salvage operations, but her decks were damaged through being blown out by the force of the air compressed when she sank. Thero was a vast accumulation of silt in lier. THE . EIMUTAKA. Tho Bimutaka, which arrived at Gisborno on' Friday from Wh'akatane, is to leavo tho' former part on Thursday for. The British Imporial Oil Company lias received advico that tho Euplectela loft Singapore, carrying large supplies of benzine, for Nc\v Zealand, on Juno 18, and is expected to arrive at Auckland ou July 9 or 10. She will proceed to Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin for further discharge, after visiting' the. northevu port.
