The railway "cut" and its effect on race meetings are being eagerly discussed in sporting circles. The Wellington Winter( Meeting, is the first to ooine on under the nev scheme, and most people thought that it would be postponed until better times come, but when seen on Saturday Secretary A. E. Whyte stated definitely that tlie meeting would be held as usual aud that all owners had been notified by 'telegram on Friday. The Wellington Kaciiig Club's secretary further stated that the General Manager of Railways had undertaken to deliver all horses offering | for Trentham providing booking arrangements were made by Tuesday.

Mr. H. De Lautour, a- prominent steward of 1 the Gisborue Racing Club and the on4er of the Great Northern winner, Cynic,! arrived in Wellington on Saturday. He has come to. meet a 'brother wno is returning from active service. At Trentham on Saturday Coalition (H. M'Sweeney) was schooled over the big fences, and gave his usual finished display. Cynic,' Carlysicn, and Happy Valley, in charge of F. Loornb, reached Trentham on Friday night, and the trio were given easy work on Saturday morning.

Sleight of Hand is off colour, anil Sir. P. Armstrong lias definitely decided not to race the Mystification gelding' again until the National Meeting in August. The. Irivercargill trainer P. TrHogau, •,with a team of horses for the Trentham meeting, is expected to reach Wellington on Tuesday morning. F. D. Jones will not run Bore in the Grand National Steeplechase, as he considers the journey too cevere for him. Unless Mr. H. A. Knight desires to run Euripos in the Grand National Hurdle Race, he will not be a starter, although tie has been nominated. Collector, who got a very ugly fall when schooling over hurdles nt Kiccarton some months ogo, and looked as if he had knocked himself out for good, has recovered sufficiently to be used ns a hack by Us owner. M. Hobbs would liavo liked to race some of his team at the National Meeting, but they are not eligible, with the exception of Gay Lafl, as none of them is four years old, the minimum ago at which a horse may race at tko meeting. ■ Mr. J. Bull, who last year won the Ladies'. Bracelet at Hastings with- All Over, won both events at the same meet- ■ Ing last week with the Maniopoto gelding Omahu, who seems' to be a greatly improved liorse. His owner considered nominating Omahu for the Winter Cup, but eventually it was decided to run All Over in that event.
