On Saturday a selection ballot was held by the Hutt Labour Representation Committee to select the Labour candidate to contest iho Hui't seat at the general elections. Mr. C. H. Chapman was returning officer. Two polling booths were provided, "tone at the Hutt and the other at Ranfurly Hall, Petone. The voting was continued nil day, ;and closed at seven o'clock. A very large number of members of affiliated union? voted iu the selection ballot, which was conducted on the preferential method. The candidates were Messrs. A. Anderson, S. L. Churchouse, and D. IC. Pritchard. Mr. Prilchard secured an absolute majority on tho first count. On declaring Ml Pritchard the Labour candidate for the Hutt, Mr. Chapman congratulated the Labour Representation Committee members on the interest shown in the ballot. Mr. Pritchard briefly thanked the members for' the honour conferred on hmi. Mr. Churchouse' and Mr. Anderson, in congratulating Mr. Pritchard, both declared their intention to do all that was possible to ensure that gentleman s election to Parliament; The proceedings concluded with a hearty yoto °f thanks to Mr'. Chapman for acting as returmni, officer.
At a Health Conference in London, Dr. Howarth said 'he had seen girls m the snow and slush of winter dressed more fittingly fo.' a garden party in summer than for the inclement weather. J.ur coats, he declared, did not counterbalance short skirts, open-work stockings, and low-nccked blouses. During the war. Dr. Howarth said,' girls working in Government offices had been able- to obtain substantial meals provided at the canteens, but he very much feared that the regrettable practice common among office, girls of taking light bun and coll'ee lunches would now be reverted to. Speaking on welfare work. Miss Newcombo declared that a sense of humour was essential for welfare superintendents. so that they could laugh at ■themselves, nt the management, and at the workers.
