"How to SBloot Your Breeding Pens." , Mr. J. W. Green, speaking at a, meeting of the New Zealand Poultry Club on "How to Sclect Your Breeding Pene," Baid lio w-aa going to speak to the younger members who were about to select their pens of breeders. He advised securing the best, champion layers—late mouitera. Theso birds should bo stopped laying, given a plain ration, and free range, ftot enough thought was given to the case of the breeders. He knew it was hard for one to rest a, hen when eggs were, dear, but the longer the i.en was rested the better the chickens would be. He would discard any birds that went fut of profit, broody, or had the slightest check during their flr6t year's laying as pullets, ne always liked to select as gooc a specimen of the breed as possible for the breeding pen, not a. layer only. They must have type, constitution, and and he liked to' know how each individual bird was bred. The same remarks applied to the male bird. Pullets were not in it as breeders with hens wjiich had been stopped laying, and given a good plain ration. Breeding from pullets was 3»ke breeding in the dark, aB only about 20 per cent, were found suitable for the breeding pen. their first twelve months' laying. Early ohickens were the best, tho chief reason being that the hea had a good rest. vr hen tho hen was laying for a long period she lost vitality, .consequently tho chick was weaker. With regard to selecting eggs for sotting, it was "unwise to' mcubatc under-sized eggs, even though tho eggs had been-laid by a champion layer; it omy intensified the weakness. There were two kinds of chickens—the one you could not. kill and the one you could not rear, iiio first-named was produced from the hen which had been rested on free range and given* a good plain ration, while the weakly chickens fall lioad and beak) were from tho bird that was confined in its house, not rested nor given an opportunity to partake of green food or scratch for the many insects which were to bo found when , the breeders were given their free range. ! He did not believe in segregating the , male bird during the moulting season;. I it was better to give a- bird its liberty, as confining it meant running its constitution. Replying to questions he said all champion layers were lato mouitera; they could be stopped laying by giving each bird half a teaspoonful of ealts tjvice a week and fed sparingly. t He did not believe in breeding from birds m the inoutt and laying; it was unwise to give breeders green bone, as it was a forcing food. In concluding,' l£r. .Green , advised young members to be particular in tho selection of the breeders, to v get in contact with well-known poultrymen and to visit their yards, even without being asked.
