HAWKE'S BAY MEETING NUMEROUS FALLS •IN JUMPING EVENTS. .By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.' Hastings, June 27. The weather was fine but very cold for tho first day of tile Ilawke's Bay Jockey Club's Winter Meeting.. There was a good attendance, and tile course was in good going order.' As last year's winter meeting was run in conjunction willi the Ilawke's Bay Hunt' Club's fixture, it was decided to take, the figures for the 1917 meeting for totalisator comparison 'purposes. On the first day of the 1917 meeting the sum of ,£14,989 was/ • passed through the machine, as against .£'.21,505 this year, an increase of iGGOti. .' The Woodlands Hack. Steeplechase was a disappointing race, and with the exception of Peneton, who was.a good favourite, ail the candidates made mistakes. Peneton was soon in front, and led the whole way. • Mannwapango got rid of his rider at the double,' and tho sod wall proved too much for Juan and Sir Donald. Gwynne refused the same fence in the next round. Negative fell at the last fence, but was remounted <ind got third money. Peneton won very easily, Sail. Homo being half a mile behind: ICohu and-Aurora was the oTder. of favouritism in the Hack Hurdles, for which Master Moutoa and Gunwale were withdrawn. . Wcodlark, Master Boris,' Ifohu, and Sensitive were the leading division for a mile and a quarter, when Woodl'ark dropped out of it. The other trio took the last fence together, but ICohu finished tlie best, and won easily by' a length from Sensitive. _ Alteration . finished very fast, and iust missed second", place. Master '.Boris was fourth and Aurore - next. Etalluni was 'badly left, and 60 was Torps, but both went on for the schooling.." - The Hawke's Bay Hurdles was a very tame affair. Miiltive was withdrawn on the course, and the'publio backed Movement and. Master Moutoa ■ equally. Tho latter came to grief at the second fence, and Movement and AV hiro went on together, but the last-named fell heavily at the samo fence as Master Moutoa.. Movement then. cantered on alone and won pulling up from ['Cello. The big/Steeplechase was a fiasco, and of the six runners not one completed, the course-without -mishap. Foeman .was a good favourite, but the others wero all evenly backed. At tho first fence Vacuum ran off, and at the back double the first time Foeman and Ormsby ran off, while Polthogue fell at the stone wall the second -time,." This left only Bon Kevo and Styrax in the race, but the top weight/ fell at tho double the last time round, while Sty'm refused, the stone wall. Meanwhile Bon Revo was remounted by P. FJtpin, and won easily, but he could' not draw the weight. Polthogue and Vacuum . were remounted,- but. the latter.wouid not take on the stone-woll. Pollhog'ue .fell again, but was remounted and completed the course in time to win. - Later , on got . over and camo in for' second : money. As a steeplechase the race was a great failure, but it provided' plenty of,'amusement for tho crowd present,'. The • couiitry is hot' more difficult than. in..previous years, and .'neither, was the going-very heavy. • Pretty Bo'bby-was the "only withdrawal from the Winter Hack Handicap. Gl.itcian was favourite, but a bad passage spoilt any. chance he had, and at .110 stage could lie get near the front. Doric and White Hanger- niado the early runniiig,\'but the latter dropped out at the turn.- Doric was joined by Utuwai, but the Demosthenes gelding soon shook off Utuwai; and in tho last few strides ho Buccumbed' to a fine finishing xun by Maori Te ICiangn, -who Won by: a head. Utuwai .was a length away, and then came' Transmission. / On returning.' to sc-file ,the winner could not drij.w tho' weight,--and Doric-got .first placo, with .-Utuwai second and Transmission third.. The weight inc-idciit wis inquired into, and it was explained that tho rider hadremoved a-nair'of goloshes after; weighing' out. '/' ■■■''. !■ • ,'

-.The.'.Bracelet', was a good thing, for Oninhu,'-. who won easily 'from Mattock and Biackalk . The winner was' always well placed,- and; taking charge at the' half-mile>he n-op comfortably;..

I i; :-A;.great- boil' l over 'was experienced in' the' Heretinmea Handicap, when tlie little-'fancied Detroit took charge a furlong from lioiue, and won decisively by a couple of lengths: .Honey Bee was a good' favourite, and made the .early running with'.Sweet Corn, clear of'/Elocution and' Vagabond. l Across the bottom stretch Detroit. became prominent, and taking cliaree in the 'straight, • lie won easily, from Elocution- and Old Gold. Honey Beo and Matatu-a were close. up. The lastnamed, came'from a long way back. DETAILED RESULTS.
