PAEKAKARIKI ROAD
NEW THOROUGHFARE REQUIRED,
- The conference of f.ho New. Zealand Automobile T|nion yesterday decided to Mlje the. construction of the proposed new-.-road from Wellington to Paeknkariki, via Pukcrua. The present-' horoughfare, it was stated, ivag exceedingly dangerous, and it was absolutely essential; in* the'interests.of safety that th 6 projected road should be laid down. '; Dr. C. Prondergast Knight ton) said there .would bo no difficulty 1 about the construction of the road beyond Pukerna railway station. A little further on it might be necosisary'to put up a concrete wall, but as tho present road was the mailt aJteriul route into Wellington from tho West Coast it'v-as desirable that the work .of. construction of the new thoroughfare should bo carried out. There should also be a. good road over the Eimuitakas. ,He''moved: "That the union recommend to the Government the Work' of ' constructing the /proposed new road from Wellington to Paekakariki, via Pukerua., in crder to : avnid the elevation at Paeknknrilu, also a deviation over the Rimutaka, in.view of the fact that, both these roads constitute the main highways from Wellington." ; - ...

...During the course of disciiFsion. it was pointed out that tho Kimutaka routa uouiiQ have to be surveyed. Mi C. M. Banks (Wellfngton) that the yoliime of traffic into the Wailarapii would justify tho construction of a tunnel through the hill even if it were a mile Jong. motion was carried.
