Russell's ' statement, published in the Sydney • papers, .that the stories of distress among them form part of u propaganda in Syd- ' ne.y to force the position, at the New -i /,(.-aland ..end. ... 'i'ho stranded New Zealanders' message adds: "The cases which ; have been brought to the notice of our '■ executive have been fully and carefully [ investigated. Regarding a Press telegram from Wei- j lington yesterday concerning the dete-ntion. of the Moeraki at Auckland, the Union Company's head olfice reports that every : effort '.was mado to secure a full New Zealand crew for tho vessel. It was only when -these efforts had failed that the services of the original .'Australian crew were re-engaged for the run to Sydney, so that a large number of passengers who had been delnyod at Auckland cculd be taken to their homes in Australia.
