' Shortly after 10 o'clock yesterday morning the Eire Brigade distinj;uisiied itself bv coping very promptly and effectively witli a fire that might easily have wrought havoc in a valuable .business quarter of. the city. The brigade ivcs summoned lo the precises of Mr. Claude H. Perrett, chemist, in Manners Street, and it was on the scene within the space of three minutes. The occasion of the alarm was a Maze that had broken oyt in ,a . specially constructed concrete room where chemicals, such 09 glycerine, methylated spirit, and benzine were 'stored. Mr. Perrett's message hoy, who had been engaged in putting some jars and Bottl&s on the shelves of the storeroom, had suddenly, noticed a flame • issuing from a liart ol' the concrete floor on which a tin of bemuns had been resting. He immediately ia.n into the front shop to warn his employer, and Mr. E. Perictt had at considerahle risk to himself closed the door of tho storeroom to prevent the spreading of tho fire. The brigada dia cot ta£o long to extinguish the flames. There was a fine pressure of water available, and if; was not found necessary to use the chemical' engine. The contents of flio storeroom wore destroyed by the fire, and heat and smoke' did n certain amount of damage to the contents of the simp. v Mr. Pencil's stock ■ and fittings are insured in various offices for v£l7oo. The building, which has other tenants liosidoa Mr. Peirett, is owneu by tho late Dr. Harding's estate, anu is insured in the Sun Office for J51750. The origin of the firo is ii complete mystery.
