RATES ON GAS MAINS
i The Finance Committee of the City j Council reported last evening thnt-they } .had received tho following report -from ! the City Solicitor with respect to the' j Tilting of gas mains, in the city:— i In the case, .Auckland Corporation v. | Auckland Gas Company, the Court of | Appeal unanimously decided that the ! mams were rateable whether the system 1 of rating. was under the annual value ! or under tho unimproved value. I adI vised the corporation in 1911 that.(ho j gas mains were rateable under the.unimproved system of rating. On the Valuer-General refusing to carry out this suggestion in reliance on tho advice of j the Solicitor-General, the council dropped' i tlie matter. The result is that tho Gas i Company has escaped rating for eight ; year's. I suggest that the application I to the Valuer-General be renewed at i once. ' ' . ! ' The report was approved.
