TRAMCAR LEAVES THE RAIL?
* T-'. ■ ACCIDENT ON LAMBTON QUAY. Shortly after 7.15 last night car No. 20, Thorndon. bound, driven by Motnrman 'James Dotchin and in charge of Conductor A. Edwards, left the'rails opposite the Commercial Hotel, on Lambton Quay. The ear travelled '-about six yards on its correct course, and then branched off at :i sharp angle, and crashed into one of the overhead line supports alongside one of the posts of the verandah of the hotel. None of the passengers was injured, but oil suffered more or less from shock. The damage to thecar was not extensive, and no damage was done to the forepart. The nost into which the car crashed waa split at the bottom. The cause of the accident is attributed to the wooden blocks, which are said to have risen ow'inj to the rain. Inspector Dunn was quickly on the scene of the accident, and he immediately took charge. By means of chains hooked ion to another car the car was hauled back on to the line in a very short time. But then the trouble hegan, fo'r the car was not squarely on the line, and it took sometime and much mar.oeuvring to bring the car to move along sufficiently well to take her to the sheds. However,"with the aid of car No. GQ and the breakdown car This was eventually accomplished, and shortly after 8 o'clock the trams, which meantime had been diverted down Customhouse and Jervois Quays, resumed their running along Lambton Quay. -.'
