TENDERS FOR PIPITEA WHARF
THE ! WATERSIDE WORKERS'
AGREEMENT
Mr. J. G.' Harkness presided over the monthly meoting of.tho.Harbour Board held last evening. There were present Messrs. J. W. M'Bwau, A. D. M'Leod, It. A. Wright, M.P., C. ii' Arthur, J. G. Cobbe, C. H. Chapman,, C. M. Turrell, E, E. Sinclair, M. Cohen, and M. W. Welch.
The statement of accounts showed the current account to' be in credit .£66,183 16$ Id.. tb,e imprests account in credit .JS3S9I -Iss. 5d., ou fixed.deposit .£60,000. The payments for the month totalled 430.780 2s. 4d.
The chairman reported that the tender of Mr. P. C. Watt for a brick store at. the foot of the Taranaki Street Wharf, for the sum of £14,485 -7s. Id., had been accepted. ■; ' It was decided to call for tenders for the ;Pipitea Wharf, tenders to be in by September 24. The chairman etated that the erection of this work had been authorised a long time ago, but the work iiad to be postponed because of the difficulty of obtaining material. The plans had been amended by the engineer in • the light of his recent experiences abroad, arid they were now complete. The shortest length of the wharf overall would'be 764 ft. and the longest 948 ft. It would be 20ft. wider than either the King's or the Glasgow Wharf. The shed would be 760 ft. long and 107 ft. wide. It would be 45ft. wider and 62ft. longer than' the shed on the King's Wharf. The chairman stated with respect to tho visit of the battleship yS'ew Zealand that the vessel would "be berthed alongside the King's Whaif. He explained that at a meeting of citizens convened by the Mayor to make arrangements for Hie entertainment of Admiral Lord Jellicoe and his men lie had taken it upon himself to say that the board would place nt the disposal of those entertaining' the sailors and those concerned with the visits of children from the country the King's Wharf sheds. This would be a great convenience to' the visiting children, and an assurance to the parents that the cuildrpn would re. ceive care and attention. The latest information was thnt the battleship would not be here until anoufc tho middl* of Aueust." The action of the chairman was approved.
With respect to the recent agreement with the waterside workers . who_ had been granted an ir.crenie, thn chairman snid there were some unomalies in the agreement, and that experts had this matter under consideration' • Re suggested that th-i board should authorise Captain Munro to be present when the anomalies wcro being discussed.
The enginepr was authorised to call for tenders locally for the eupply of steel bars, plates, angles, etc, and also to order three additional electric tractors.
