PEACE CELEBRATIONS

A THREE-DAYS' PROGRAMME MEMORIAL TREES A 6tnlenient regarding the Peace Celebrations in New Zealand was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs (tlio Hon. G. \V. Husseli). ! "Now that peace is assured," said the Minister, "Cabinet has been considering the pence celebrations in our country, and the decision is (hat the original programme is to bo carried out. The celebrations will spread over threo days —Sunday,, to bo observed by special Services in the churches; Monday, for official and military gatherings; and Tuesday, the children's day. The question ot utilising Saturday for eorno form' of celebration has been considered. In Great Britain this is to be Naval Day, but in New Zealand wo have no navy, and the season of the year renders it impossible' to have any form of marine demoiistration ns a tribute to the work of the Navy. It has, therefore, been determined to recommend to the people of tlie country that the Saturday afternoon shall be devoted to the planting of memorial trees, aud it is hoped that in every city and in every town, hamlet, and district in the Dominion the local authorities will take steps to plant trees suitable to every, locality. It is hoped that the Education Department and the education boards will lend us assistance in this matter, and also that the Forestry Department will assist in the supply of suitable trees. All the arrangements made for the subsidising cf moneys collected for peace celebrations and for the running of special trains are to stand." At" present the Government is still under-instruction not to divulge the dates on which the celebrations are to be held, but they havo' been advised confidentially of the dates. Presumably the dates are being kept secret' in case there , may be any hitch about the signing of the Treaty. The local bodies and other societies interested in the celebra- • tions ' may rest assured, however, that they will have plentj of time in which to prepare for the great festival.
