THE WAR INDEMNITY
NEW ZEALAND'S SHARE, No official announcement has yet been made concerning the share of tue liritiah Dominions in tho German war indemnity. The iirst instalments of the fiideuinity is to be paid soon after the siKning of the Peace Treaty, but it is possible that this money will be applied to urgent works of restoration, aria that payments to tho Dominions will come later. The question has a bearing upon tho course of New Zealand finance during the.next year or two. Some weeks ago u report from Paris stated that immediately after the Germans had signed the Peace Treaty an Imperial Conference would be held in London, when any adjustment of tho claims of Britain, tho Dominions, aud India would be made, and the method of Ijii.vinent decided upon. It wns suggested that the. method of payment might not depend upon the period fixed for the payments by Germany. Some of tho Dominions migirt be "glad to accept a lump sum from the Mother Country in total settlement." . The same, report stated that other subjects of, discussion at the Imperial Conference would be tho inter-Imperial payment of war pensions and somo questions connected with the former German colonies.
