The naxmills : in the Auckland district haVe closed down : for the eeason (according to tho ! "Horald"), and unless conditions improve during the next few months not many ; mills are likely to resume operations in ! tho spring. Eepresentatives of firms in. ; fcirated in the industry stated last week ' that the Home markets.for hemp had i ehown a falling tendency-during the loot : few weeks, while freights wero still very I high as compared with pre-war rates. 1 The American'market was stated to bo • ptill very dull, and at tho ruling prices ■ millers could not place the hemp on the ' market at a profit.
