V Hicks, and Appleton are unbeaten ;to vdate-in th's Ngaio Club's tourney, while '■; , ;Meste,'..Brooker ) H. •L. James, Topp, and Westbrooke, each with only , ",pne .lose, are also well to the fore. The ■'Icither two .handicap tourneys (Wellington ' Club and.Working Men's Club) were only commenced last week, ana , are therefore not sufficiently advanced for a progress report. ■■•■-'■ The Wellington Club's annual championship tournament vras commenced on ::;. Saturday evening with eighteen entries. •The-entries include the first fifteen names on the ladder, and a great contest for the club championship is thus assured. The following are the results of the first round:—Fouhy, 1; Faulknor, "0 • "Purchas, 1; Godhschalk, 0; W. Mackay; 1-; Kelling, 0; W. E. Mason. 1; E. ' S. Taylor,' 0; and Daviee, 1; Lee, 0 (after a very hard fight, in which Mr. Lee had the upper- hand for a long time). The .game G. P. Anderson v. L. Sim (a re- ' turned soldier) stands adjourned in a " verv even state.- The fixtures James v. S. Gyles, H. A. Ward v. A. Clark, and Still v. Barnes were not commenced. No fewer than fourteen "ladder" challenges have been issued during the past four weeks, this increased activity being due to the new rule which permits a player to challenge any one of the three players immediately above him on the ladder. Matches have been won by Messrs. W. ' Mackay, Purchas, G. P. Anderson (2), E. S. Taylor, Faulknor, Chilteu, Greig, Grady, and Bock. Messrs. , Anderson and Faulknor each climbed three rungs during the past month. A number -of other matches, are pending or in progress. The room which the Wellington Chess " Club has occupied in tho Y.M.C.A. build-' ing for tho past six years is required for other purposes, and the club has accordingly trekked to Cuba Street. Members appear to bo well satisfied with the new room, on the walls of which are dis-' played the two dozen framed photographs that have been stored away in a dungeon since 1913. _ Tho president of tho Wellington Workins; Men's Club has received a framed illuminated certificate from the hon. secretary of tho Mosterton Chc3s Club, the wording of which is as follows:—"Easter Chess Bally, Masterton, April 18, 19, 21, .1919:- This is to certify that in tho interclub tournament (major event) the Wellington Working Men's Club, represented by Messrs. 11. J. Barnes, P. K. Kelling, and S. Faulknor, secured first place, with a 6cort; of 12t points out of a possible 15. On behalf of tho Management Committee.—(Signed) Gco. A. Jones (chairman), H. H. Thirtle, B. D. Holmwood (members), , A. Clomas (hon. secretary)." Tie work of tho artist, Mr. E; P. Fentou, of Maeterton, is greatly admired. The supplementary event at the rally held in Mosterton during the Easter holidays was a one-life knockout handicap tourney, open to all who were not enggaged in the main event. There were sixteen competitors, the winner Ijoing Mr. 11.- E. Ashby, of the South Wellington Club. Mr. W. Armstrong, president of that club, anting on behalf of the Masterton Chess Club, recently presented the prize (a gold medal) to Mr. Asliby, who returned thanks for the many felicitations und good wishes that accompanied the trophy.
