NAPIER PARK MEETING
FOEMAN WINS BIG RACE.
ißy Telegraph—Special Correspondent..' . ~ Napier, June 20. Glorious weather prevailed for the opening day of the Napier meeting. F. Meagher, who rode Manhattan in the Hack Seeples, received a broken collarbone when that, horse fell at the second fence.
The sum of <£10,055 was passed through >ho totalisator, which was an increase of £855, compared with tho first day's Winter Meeting last year. A useful field contested the Hack Hurdles, and the public backed Master Moufcoa, Movement, Bio, Sensitive, Master Boris, in that order. 'The start was a good one, but the field had not gone far before Movement and Hydras took charge. The first fence strung the field nut, the favourite in particular losing a lot of ground. ' Hydrus was done with after going ten furlongs, and Movoment kept her-lead and. won easily. Kohu finished well, and beat Rio and Sensitive, who ran in together. Master Moutoa was going on well at the finish, .'but Master Boris failed badly. ■The top weight, Master Webster, was the favourite for the Hack Steeples, and 1 he won nicoly, but was a trifle lucky, as Manawapango, who finished third, covered a lot moro ground than anything else in the race. The last-named and Chaban mado tho running for a, milo, when the favourite and Torchy became prominent, but it was not until the last fence that they disposed of Manawapango. Sail Home and Manhattan- fell, end Captain, Black ran off.
Tiranga and Sweet Corn, divided faTouritiam in the Stewards' Stakes. The former gavo a good display, but. tho mare raced badly, and at no stage was she near the leaders, Damien and Sea Lord made tho Tunning from Vagabond and' All. Over. For the first half-mile ocross the bottom stretch, Gold Kip and Ohinowairua becamo prominent. Entering the straight, All Over was in charge, but Ohinowairua soon, headed him. Tiranga thon came from a long way back and beat all but Ohinowainio, who won by a neck, Bagdad ran a good race, piid was close up third, and in a bunch came Silver Tongue, All Over, Sir A.gnes, and Crosswords. Gray was to have' ridden the winner, but at the last moment lie was taken off and P. Brady Sot the ride, while Gray got up on Tiranga. Arlington and Bollin were withdrawn from tho "big ovent, and Poltlwguo was made a good favourite, whilo Diavolo, Foeman, Ormesby, and Vacuum were all evenly- backed. Ormesby, Diavolo, <md the favourite ,led for a mile, when the latter pulled to tho front. Going out of the straight the last time,- Foeman fan ito the front, and down the back the favourite fell. Foeman gave a good, clean exhibition of- jumping, and ran in 'an easy winner.. Tliero was a great finish for second place, Ormesby, • Styrax, and Vacuum finishing in a heap. Tarero fell. Had the favourite not fallen ho might have been second,-but lie had no chance with the winner, who is now thoroughly sound and'will be heard of again.
Master Lupin and Riiddv were 'withdrawn. from the' Necklace, the stable relying on Yankee Jack, who started a good favourite. He ran a fair race, hut nt the finish was comfortably beaten by White R-anger, while Bkckail also headed him on the post. Ethiopian was out in front for six furlongs, wheTO Whito Banger took charge, and though he was doing his best at the finish, he won well from Blackall, who finished l in good stylo on the rails. Maraetotara and Mattock were the next to finish.
There were only five runnera in , the Ahuriri Hurdles, but they were all well backed. At the first fence Toka turned over and Sleight nf Hand took up the running. He led for ten furlongs, when •Multicipal and Multiye joined liim. and tho top weight was right up with: them. The o.uartette was well together entering the straight, hut the two' light-weights were clear at the Inst fence, nnd Multivei who up to this point bed been jumping badly, beat Jfulticipal in- the ran home, while-two • lengths away came Master Lupin, who was a head in" front of Sleight of Hand.
■ For the concluding event where was a rush to get on Guanaco, a Food-looking pelding by Formative from Lady Atholine. He began snmrtljr. but want of a race told in the straight, an<l he wns comfortably beaten by Honey Bee. who was second favourite. A rant outsider in Goldshine olsj beat the favourite for second place. Doric was close up fourth. DETAILS OF THE, RACING. 1 1 By Teleprnuli—'Press Association.
