UNDER-WEIGHT LOAVES
,£lO FINE INFLICTED. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Joseph William Armstrong pleaded guilty to a charge of having sold a "fourpound"'loaf that weighed only 31'b. 13oz. lOdr. Jlr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., was on the bench. Jlr. Tudhopo appeared for the Crown Law Office, and Mr. J. Scott for the defendant. Jfr. Tudhopo stated that of six leaves weighed in the defendant's shop, all, were under weight. One "four-pound" loaf was s|oz. short. Mr. .Scott submitted that thlro had been no dishonesty ou the part of the defendant. Tho defendant had merely been mistaken as to the amount he should allow for evaporation in the baking. The Magistrate: "We had some trouble about watered milk recently. I wish it to bo understood that I intend to adopt tho same altitude with regard to siiorlweight bread as I have adopted with regard to watered milk. The best way (o get rid of this kind of offence is to hit. it hard every time. It's no uso phivin.g with it. The defendant will bo fined .£lO, with costs."
