POULTRY NOTES

Egg-laying Tests, Tho time in coming -when competitors in our laying teßts will have to givo greater attention to breeding for standard uoints. In the present r .est at Papanui flomo birds were discarded, but the judges in New Zealand are'not nearly bo drastio as the Government expert of New South Wales. In the Hawlteabury test tho conditions this year are very severe. In all 15 of tho pens of pullets forward for tho current laying competition at Hawkesbury Collepe were rejected and returned. 11l one instance an entrant had liis replace pen also rejected. In yet another instance a starter refused to replace two pullets that were classed below standard, and had his lot returned, with tho result that the competition will go on with. 99 competitors instead of 100. There is no question that if theso competitions are to servo their full educational purpose, a more ri<id standard had to be set in regard to. size and trueness to type and colouf, if nondescripts were not to be allowed to appear as purebred fowls. The rules have almost from the start stipulated that the birds' i> usfc be purebred, and "fair specimens" of tho breed. Admittedly, too much leniency lins been allowed in tho past, but it cannot be pleaded that breeders have not had ample warning of what was required of thorn.—'"New Zealand Poultry Journal. Wellington Poultry Show. More than usual interest is being taken in this year's annual exhibition (the 37th) of the Wellington Poultry, Pigeon, Canary, and Cat Society, \yliich is to be held on July 2, 3, and 4. Already there are indications of numerous entriefl from the best breeders in Wollington, Auckland, Chrlstohureh, TnVSreargill, and many of the smaller centres, and the prospects for a successful show ."re most favourable.
