SLIDING DOWN BANISTERS
HOW THE PRACTICE MAY BE PREVENTED.
Sir,—ln reference to the remarks made (>y Mr. Fraze-r, S.M., at the inquest on the little boy who died this week from injuries received through -falling down tho well of the staircase in the Boys' Institute, I would like to say that hero in Auckland, at the Art Gallery, the authorities have found what seems to bo quite a satisfactory method of stopping lads sliding down tho banisters, namely, small cubes or studs of wood let into tho handrail every few inches all tho way down. There is nothing difficult or impracticable in that, mid something ought to be done to protect our sons. Boys are boys all the world over, and they have always looked upon a nicely-polished handrail as their own particular property. To tell boys a practice is dangerous will not stop them; they must be protected in spite of themselves. J I hope the authorities at the Boys' Institute wiR make it impossiblo for another mother's son to meet with such an end.—l am, etc., ■ N. PERRETT.
