Sir James Allen visited the Palmerston Show on his return from the north yesterday. He will return to Wellington to-day. The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonnld, Minister of Agriculture, visited the Palinerston Show yesterday. Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, who has been ten weeks in hospital, has now returned to his homo. His henlth, though not fully establishc l , is greatly improved, says a P«ss Association telegram. . Captain Victor Gnllie, M.C., C. de G., 8.F.A., is returning by the Kigoma, due here about July 12. Mr. D. C. Bates, Government Meteorologist, has been appointed the New Zealand delegate to the International. Conference on Meteorology, to be. held in Paris in September. Mr. J. S. Douglas, of Dmiedin, and Mr, John Clark, of Auckland, have been appointed members of the Plumbers' Board of New Zealand, as the nominees of the master plumbers and journeymen plumb?rs respectively. Mr. W, H. Booth lias been appointed to the Waira-rnpa Licensing Committee, vice the kto Mr. 11. 1). Bunny. Mr. ,T. W. Brnmwell and Mr. Hugh Russell have been appointed to the Licensing Committee of the district of Oroua in place of Messrs. E. Short and E. Goodbehere. : Major T. H. Ringland has been Awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration. Mr. N. T. Gray, a visitor from the Straits Settlement, who has 'been engaged in trout-fishing and other sport in New Zealand for some months past, will leave for England, via Panama, r-n Tuesday next. Dr. and Mrs. Coates, of Dannevirke, left Auckland for England by tho Pnparoa yesterday. Among tho passengers who have booked berths by tho Arawa, leaving for England, via Panama, on Juno 24, are: Mr. and Mrs. W. Evr.ns, of Waverlcy; Mr. and Mrs. S. R. J'Vqnliav. of Awatuna. (near Eltham), and Mr. and Mrs. Algernon E. Green, of Dannevirke. Lieut. A. E. Esquilant, M.C., of Dunedin, who is arriving here next week from England bv the Prinzessin, is a brother of Mrs. Stuart-Dallas, the gifted con. ti-alto vocalist, at present residing in Wellington. The annual report of the Wellington Bowling Club has the following referenco to members who have "gotoo West" since the last annual meeting:—"Your directors record with deep regret tho death.of six members of the club during the year, viz.: Messrs. W. Simni, sen., ,T. Russell, J. Malcolm, H. A. M'Kenzie, A. Barron, and A. Lindsay. Included amongst these are three of tho oldest. members of the club, who have rendered valuable services in past years."
The death occurred at the Lower Hutt on Friday last of Mr. William Stuart, formerly a very well-known and highlyesteemed officer of the Public Service. The lato Mr.'Stuart came out from Scotland about CO years ago in the ship Jura, originally settling at Dunedin. Five years later be went to luvereargill, where bo practised aa a barrister ;.nd solicitor, until he joined the Provincial Government Service, in which he remained until the General Government was. established. He then went into practice as a bnrrister, Mr. .Tames Hervey. Subsequently he joined the Land .Transfer and Deeds Department, and in that service was transferred about: 1881 to Blenheim, and thence in 1882 to New Plymouth. He succeeded the late Mr. C. 13. Eaweon there as Stipendiary Magistrate about the pnd of 189G, after which he came to Wellington as head of the Land Transfer Department, where lie remained until his retirement same ypars ago. Mr. Stuart, who was in his eightysixth year, leaves-three daughters, his only son having died in New Plvmonth. The daughters are: Mesdames Malcolnismi (of the Lower HutO. J. Roßo (of New Plymouth), and N. Haire (of Napier).
The ilea Hi is announced of Mr.'G. B. Laidlaw, a prominent figure in Dunedin musical circles. Prior to coming to New Zealand' Mr. Laidlaw-conducted the Rothesay_ Band in Scotland. His first opportunity in Dunedin came when he was appointed to succeed Mr. K. Stratlon ns conductor of the/Kaikorai Band. Wilder his direction this hand attained high proficiency. He was conductor of tho Dunedin Orphans' Orchestra. ' For a Ion? time he was manager of the' London Organ and Piano Company. Afterwards went into business with three of his four sons.
