A MAIDEN VOYAGE. THE LINER OTIRA. An arrival at .Auckland <n Wednesday morning was the A. and A. chartered steamer Otira, which dropped anchor after a 34 days' passage from Now York. Tho Otira is a war production, launched from Harland and Wolff's stocks in April of this year, iho is a vessel of 7955 gross tonnage, twin screw, and designed to de--1 velop 14 knots. There was i otliiug extraj ordinary in connection with the vessel's baptism in tho waters of the Atlantio and Pacific,-though engine trouble prevented her from keeping religiously to her timetable. Belfast was left on April 17, and fair, weather being encountered New York was reached on the 27th of the same month. Sho loaded and left that port on' May 15, and reached Panama seven days later. She bunkttred at Panama, and cleared that port 'on May 23. Favourablo weather again prevailed in the mn aorosß the Pacific until Sunday, Juno 8, when a succession if heavy gales were encountered, lasting for four days, trouble with ono of the engines put It tut of .commission for a while, and whereas sho had previously avoraged ever 13 knots her speed decreased to an r.verago of 11. knot from tho Panama to Auckland. The Otira has over 2000 tons of geuoral cargo for Auokland, anfl after discharge r:ouie3 on to Wellington, thenco to Australia.
Having been comploted ufter the close of hostilities, tho Otira has never worn the coat of dazzc-stripes appropriate to wartime, but nevertheless sho bears every sign of having been built to trick tho U-boat. Viewed from right abeam, the might almost bo taken for a "double-ender." Her cruiser stern has th*e earao profile as her bow, the poop end forecastle pre identical, and her masts and short derrickpoles are arranged symmetrically. Both funnel and mast 3 aro vertical. Tho only thing that breaks tho precise symmetry of tlio vesso's outine is the bridge, but even this ia oalanced to some extent by a houso abaft the funnel. Taken as a wholo, tho ship is not such an extreme example of decoptivo construction as tho War Opal, whioh was recently lu port, nit still sho represents some of the latest I'ritish ideas on the subject.
