NOTES AND COMMENTS
PBy Glenuoe.]
Mr. A. E. Whyle, secretary of the Wellington ldicing Club, invites Humiliations'up till 9' p.m. on .Friday .Mr nil , events in connection with the Winter meeting to be held at Treiithani on July 8/ 10, and 12. The only incetitis to engage the attention of sportsmen this week is the Napier Pane gathering, which-is to beheld on t'riday and Saturday. The card consists of seven event*, and good helds are engaged in all the races. It in said'that, the whole of Mr. &. V. M.o»roV Bushy 'Park mares, and also the stallion Hallowmas, :'.ve to be offered, at''auction here during'race week. It is some years since an important salewiis held' iiii Wellington, but previous to the war the Waikanao' yearlings were regularly sold ;M Mr. kn D.uncaii's atablc-s, Thorndon Quay. ■ " The Auckland hack Ghician is expected to race at Trentham next month. Those who raw the son of Alicia raca at Mlleislie shite that ho was unlucky at thestart of the Filzroy Walter .Handicap, and will do better iri his next outing. It is slated that, one of the riders whose mount gave a lot rf bother at the start of the King ' George Handicap at Ellcrslic used to gallop Into another horee because hi! could not pull his mount up, and did not care to take tho ■risk-'of 'ijeeoining entangled in the web-, bing of the barrier, wliijli is unusually strong, and would upset the balance of any-horse-getting mixed up in it. This was "rather hard on the unfortunate horse that had to put-up with the bumping. - ' • • .The Waverley trainer 11. Eayncr ■is having the six-yea r-o'id gelding Simon qualified for.hunters'■'events. Later-on tlie, big fellow is to bo tried in hack ■etenplechiwes. .•• , There is likely to be keau competition far Hallowmas when he is offered for sale at Wellington next month. With the exception of.Martian, whose list is always full, Hallowmas is the only Martagon horse- in the Dominion,- and as the stock of the- English sire has dono wonderfully.well at the stud both -hero and in Australia, Hallowmas is sure to bring a good figure in the sale ring. Several three-year-olds'were raced at the. Ellerelie meeting this month, but none of them got .on .the winning list. This is not surprising, for • it is an unwise policy to .race horses of this age linder welter weights in heavy going, especially when they ■ have been racing 'regularly: throughout the season. Inst year's Winter Cup winner, Bedford, seems to have lost aM form, and since his victory at Biccarton he has only won a single race. This was at Takapuiui in January last, when ho boat ,a weak field in the Cheltenham Handicap, six furlongs. Atthe Ellerslie meeting this month ha started four time-s, but only once filled 'a place, though the going 'nrid everything else was in his favour.. The 'Bunyan gelding is • now six years old. "•" ■- ■ ■ • . There was ft lot of merit-in the win of Thrace in the Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslie, for owing to-his l>ig weight his rider had to" carry a lot of lead, and this cauied the saddle to slip back. The Poisedon gelding had to finish without any assistance from his rider, and his win was due solely'to his-superior condition. '"■'.•'■■
That us°f«l hurdle-gelding Sir Fisher was still lame after' hia return from the-Auckland , meeting, and the dual Century Hurdles winner is -not 'likely to race again this season." ' ; ' The Otaki-trained 'Want, who showed a glimpse of returning to form by fin" "ishin;* second 1 in the Open Welter Handicap dt'Lsviri, was railed to Napier.early this week, and will be a runner in the ppeii hurdles to-morrow.. As the event does not appear to l)e a difficult' one ,to win, and a? the Penury gelding always races well unde.r. a-light weight, he may be prominent in to-mftrrow's contest. Being a" fresh horse, and with plenty of jumping in Hie Nfapior Steeplechase, Polthogiie, who is a very told fencer, and has won at his .last three .sta-rfa, is sure'to .have manv. admirers- for to-mor-row.'.? ihee. In addition to the advantages above, the iieM opposed to the ffawera-trained hor?e is a weak one. . ■-... • . ■ - " U. -•::•■ ROYAL ASCOT BEVIVAI OF PEE-WAR SPLENDOUR. London, June 17. There was a remarkable revival of prewar splendour' fit'the. A?eot meeting. There was beautiful weather and a dazzling display of fashion. There wc.k a complete absence of khaki in the Royal Enclosure. A record crowd accorded their Majesties a 'tremendous ovation.— Ans.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
