ELOCUTION IN STATE SCHOOLS
OPTIONAL SUBJECT FOR A FEU
In one State school in Wellington the controlling authority has given permission to a teacher of elocution to take' classes in the school after school hours, and to charge a fet- of :»s. Bd.'per term for each child who participates in sucn instruction. It is entirely' optional for children to take up this subject. There are- parents in the district who are dieapproving of this innovation on the ground that it is subversive to the cemocratic spirit which should pervade our State schools, and letters of protest have already been written on the subject. The defenders of the innovation reply by stating that the subject is educational and optional, but many parents rosp.ut the introduction into the State schools— without consulting the Education Board —of anything that will make for class distinction between the parents of children who can afford the 2s.'6d. and those who cannot, and the introduction of those petty jealousies between scholars—particularly the girls—which is bound to follow.
