OLYMPIA BOXING CONTESTS
HUGE CROWD AT BECKETT-GOD-DABD FIGHT. (Bee. June 18, 9 p.m.) London, June 17. There was a record attendance at the Olympic boxing contests to witness Frank Goddard boxing Joe Beckett for .£2OOO and a gold cup, the winner to meet George Carpentier. Fifteen thousand scats were booked. It is estimated that the receipts totalled .0,000. The notables present included Admiral Beatty, Alcock, and Brown, the aviators, and many society Indies.
Goddard was slightly favourite, but Beckett knocked him out in the second round. Beckett scored many short jabs to tho face and the body in the first round. The referee cautioned Goddard for clinching. Beckett began the second round in hurricane style, scoring heavily. Goddard went down for nine seconds. On resuming he was unable to withstand Beckett's onslaughts, and a swift left to the chin, followed by a right, ended the fight. Townley severely punished Hardwick, whose seconds threw in the towel in the twelfth round—Aus.-NjZ. Cable Assn.
