GERMAN MINE WASHED UP
By Telegraph—Prcßß Association New Plymouth, June IS. Tho police have received information that a German mine was washed upoli the Oakura bench, a few miles south of New Plymouth, last night. A nohco officer and a. Customs officer were sent out, and n piard was placed over the. mine, pendiiiß instructions from Wellington.
Steps are being token to destroy the German mine, which has been washed up on tho coast a few miles south _ of. Now Plymouth. Tho police report indicates that the mine is of the pattern used in the minefields laid by the Germans oft the New Zealand const. The appearance of another mine shows that there is need for the work of (he mine-sweepers now on their way to New Zealand. The areas in wh'ieh tho Germane operated have been swept repeatedly by the vessels at the disposal of tho Naval authorities in New Zealand waters, but evidently it is still unsafe to assume that all til© mines have been cleared. It is possible that tho New Plymouth mine had been drifting at sea for some time,
