MANAWATU NOTES

The Palmerston High School Board has accepted the tender of Trevor Bros, at £10,540, for tlie erection of a Girls' High School. The highest tender was ,£12,728. The grant made by the Department lor the erection the building was In view of this fact the board decided that the chairman and the mem'ber for the district interview rhe Minister with 1 regard to the additional amount required for the Girls' High School, and also to bring before him need tor a girls' hostel. Yesterday morning, while some borough workmen were engaged in digging a sewer in Te Awe Awe Street one of the banks suddenly collapsed, almost burying two of the men, namod G. Walker and J. Westhead. Fortunately there were a number of other workmen in the vicinity, and the injured men were quickly dug out and conveyed to their homes in a motor-car by. Mr.-S. M'Aulay. They were badly shaken and bruised, but it is understood that 110 bones were broken. Their escii.po from more serious injury is little short of miraculous, as several tons< of sand fell on them. A scheme for the raising of funds for the purpose of providing a boys* high school and projected girls' high school, each with an up-to-date hostel, was tallied by tho chairman (Mr. T. R. Hodder) at -the last meeting of the Palmerston North High School Board of Governors. Mr, Ifoddor gave an outline of the proposal, and after a short discussion the following recommendations of a special committee set up were adopted: —(1) That the college house be enlarged; (2) that the enlargement consist of an up'to-date kitchen in brick and diningr.oom block on the ground floor, and a second lloor. with dormatories to accommodate 40 boys; (3) that the scheme be financed by debentures at G per cent., or other method that the board may desire. Mr. A. C. Hillier, of Shannon, has been elected unopposed as tho Labour Party's candidate, for tlie^ Mauawatu seat at the forthcoming election. At a meeting of the Man.rwatu Rugby (Inion. it was decided to ask the Wanga- : nui Union to play a match against Manawatu at Wanganui on July 5. Ah application that the High School seniors bo reclassified as juniors was withdrawn after discussion.' The Wellington Union advised that it'was agreeable to playing home and home matches, the first match to be played at Wellington in August, and a return game nt Palmerston North in September.
