RAILWAY DEPARTMENT'S RESPONSIBILITY
DAIRYMEN'S GRIEVANCES. (By Telegraph—Special Reperter.) Palmerston North, .Tunq IT. The liability of the Railway Department with regard to goods they carried was discussed at to-da.v's meeliwr of the' National Dairy Association. The president, Mr. A.- ; Morton, said that the railway authorities disclaimed all responsitilit.v unless goods were shipped at some point where there was a stationmaster. If the Department undertook to carry produce they should not try. to avoid a responsibility which they, as pommoii carriers, should undertake. The executive was shortly to approach the Cnbinefc in the matter, and it. would strengthen their hands if there was an expression of opinion from the meeting. Tli" Department's attitude was obviously unfair. Several speakers gave instances of losses incurred in shioping through neglect or omission on the part of the Department. and'for which tho Department refused to mnlce any compensation. All agreed that the producers were_ labourin? under a disadvantage which was manifestly unfair. Ultimately a resolution was' adopted . strongly protesting against the action of the Department.
