LIFE SAVING SOCIETY

*- MONTHLY MEETING. I A meeting of tho Wellington Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society was held last evening, Mr. G. S. Hill presiding. In a communication to tho secretary (Mr. W. C. Collier), Mr. William Henry, secretary of tho Royal Life Saving Society, London, :nnde leference to tho good work done by Mr. A. N.. Sonimerville, and forwarded under separate cover an instructor's certificate and an honorary associate's certificate, together with the society's badge for presentation to him. The chairman paid a high tribute to tho work which Mr. Soramerville had done for the society, and said that it gave him much pleasure on behalf of tho parent institution to make the presentation to such, nn enthusiastic worker. The recipient suitably responded. It was decided to recommend to .the Dominion Executive that the Government he npyroached with .regard to the appointment of Departmental swimming and life-saving instructors in the four centres of New Zealand. It was o!fio decided to- bring tho matter before the school. committees, and ask for their support in obtaining instructors. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to urge upon tho Dominion Executive the desirability of asking tho, Government for an increased grant to assist the society in its work. It was decided to congratulate the Palmcrston North Amateur Swimming Club and Mr. Bowen (Royal Life Saving Society's representative) on the large number of awards received during tho past season. • The public schools Life Saving Challenge Shield competition for tho past season was won by tho Mount Cook School, and it was decided to present tho shield to the school. To Aro School was tho runner up in the competition, , which was conducted at the Tepid Baths.

The awards made during the past season totalled IGO as against 387 for the previous season. The oast season's total was mado up as follows:—Wellington City, 112; Palmerston . North, 3G; and Blenheim, 12. '
