PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Petono Borough Council met last night. Present: Tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), Councillors Bedinglield, jsrocklebank, Cox, Churchouse. Kyle, Hay, Anderson, Cook, and Tovoy. The Health inspector reported two cases 'of diphtheria and one of enteric fever in the borough. An application from G. R. Apllil for the transfer of a lease to W. M'Kerran was granted. The town clerk, Wellington, wrote regarding the council's request that a conference of contributing bodies should b« called to consider the hospital levies, stating that the City Council had on previous occasions protested, but legislation was necessary before effective measures could be taken.—Received.
The Minister of Internal Affairs wroto setting forth the proposals of the Go>ernment regarding permanent peaco memorials, and stating the objects on which local\ authorities might 6peno" money.—Received. The District Health Officer wrote enclosing a copy of his authority to Messrs. Lever Bros, to establish tlie trade of soap boiling within the terms of section 85 of the Public Health Act. and pointing out that as the local authority had to grant a similar permit before the trade could be established, he would be pleased to receivo a copy of same, provided the council was satisfied with the sanitary condition of the works—lt was resolved to grant the permit.
Several complaints as to nuisances in the borough having been received, it was resolved to give twenty-eight days' notice to eneli of tho persons concerned to have the necessary repairs and improvements carried out.
It was resolved that the Mayor and any councillors who could conveniently spare tho time should attend the forthcoming Chambers of Commerce Conference in Wellington.
A letter from the Lower Hutt Labour Party seeking the co-operation of the council in protesting against the establishment of a prison camp in the Hutt Valley was received. It was decided to support the proposal circulated by the Napier Borough Council asking Cabinet to declare Anzac Da; a statutory holiday.
Mr. A. Dougall wrote enclosing a copy of his award on the matters submitted to his arbitration in connection with the Hutt gas supply. After considerable discussion on the award of the arbitrator it was decided to receive the report. A petition signed by the majority of tho fruiterers in Pctono asking that tho hours of closing fruit shops be 8 p.m. from Monday to Tliursday and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday was received. It was decided to accede to the request. The engineer's report stated that-the minimum pressure of water was -101b. and the maximum 85lb. The average weekly consumption of water for the month of May amounted to 2,204,400 gallons. During tho month 21 gas meters were changed and -t new meters were put in. It was stated that the question of a now gas generator would have to be gone into soon, as the present generator would have to be rclined shortly. The relining would take at least a week. During the month the generator had been running for 235 hours, and tho number of units generated was 9SIO. One building permit had been issued during the month. Annual licenses had been issued to seven motor-cycles and four cars.
