WASTED MONEY
■ .- __>.____ .451,393 FOR TWO CONCRETE "- BARGES.. In the annual report on the Army Appropriation Account for the' year ended March 31, 191S, a, very remarkable story is. told about the waste of money on two experimental .concrete barges of 500 tons each, ordered by the Inland Waterways and-Docks Department. "The contract," tho report says, '.'is stated'to havo been loosely worded and' indefinite; best imported timber bad been used for the moulds, where much cheaper would have served the purpose;-'■ And generally thero appears to have-been a waste of public money. The site on which the barges .were constructed, and on which a lar-o sum of money had been sunk, could not, it was found, be utilised for any purpose by the Admiralty-or- War Office. The total ! payments in respect of the two barges up to September last.was J!51,398. The Admiralty, it may bo noted, appear to have been able to buy 1000-ton barges at a cost of 414.000 each.-"
