Tho attempt at converting failed. .Poneke,' 3; Potone, nil. Poneke continued to pre.* vigorously, the forward pack in particular being very ■ aggressive. ■ This' aggressiveness, however, did"not ;enable tliein to increase their score.' Soon after, a passing rush by tho" Petono backs car. ried the ball 'to tho corner, and'Petono looked very much like scoring. . Unfortunately, however, Parker, after seeming the ball, stumbled,-and tho opportunity was lost. A littlo Inter the ball travelled down to the other end of the field, and Al'Arthur for Poneko made an unsuccessfu attempt to pot a goal. Good linekicking by Petono saved the situation many times. The Wellington Rugby Union werevery wise, in. i'elegrtting tho* AtnletiCr Oriental 'match' to No. 2 ground, Ath-letic'Park,-on Saturday, so poor was the standard -of piny. Very little interest was taken in the game ..winch, ?s the score would indicate, was very one-siacu. Athletic won by 28 points to nil;. Oriental-, played a shockingly poor-game, displaying no combination at all.' lhW best man was Gair, tho wing-forward, who was "alive" tho wholq time, .and did his best to bring his sido into aconug situations. ' With. the exception of two .or three tiiue3, the "White and Blacks were on the defensive'all through, the game y and -it was a wonder .that the score, against them was. not oven greater.Oriental kicked oft',- and had:a, momentary advantage, but E. Roberts soon got the" ball'''for Athletic, and .-lie .and Schrader participated in- a-' rush all on their own down -the line from halfway. Schroder, was.held up, but Atlilctic kept possession of the ball; and Chesternian was able to get'over at .the opposite, corner."Griffin''failed. : '.w > ith. tllii' kick; Athletic; 3; "Oriental, 0., A minute or bo, later, Athletic swooped.',do\vn ;in a rush, 'and Oriental were compelled to seek refuge in a force down. In tho ensuing play Gair did some good , work for the Black and Whites, and he initiated a dribbling rush to • the Athletic line. The attack:.was repelled, -and Oriental were, penalised, for an; infringement. Griffin took the kick, but the ball struck tho post. Piny now., became most dull, and nothing of any interest occurred until ■ Roberts -got 'the Athletic rear division going in- u. movement which terminated in'Schradei scoiing a try. There was" no goal. Athletic, 6 ; Oriental, 0. A little before -'halftime M'Cabe scored aii'other try for t'lie Blue and" Blacks, and ho converted it himself, making tho score: Athletic, 11; Oriental, 0. Tho'second spell was oven less attractive than the first; and the Athletic total was brought up to 28, tho try-getters being M'Cabe (2), Chesterman (2),. and Schrader. M'Cabo converted the second try, he obtained in. this spell, ■which was also tho final score of the match. During tho course of the play in t>e second half Oriental lost the .services of F. Carr, wKS received a kick on the shoulder, and his place was filled by J. Devine. Mr. A. M'Bain was referee.
SELWYN (5) V; WELLINGTON (3),
In tho match Sehvyn v. Wellington, played oil Duppa Street Park, both teams were very scratchy, and piny was inclined to bo somewhat rough. Immediately after tho kick-off Sehvyn got away, and an opening gavo Peart the chance to score, and ho touched down aftor a good run. A. Wogan converted. Sehvyn, 5; "Wellington, ,0. Wellington then took the offensive, and Porter, intercepting a pass, transferred to Packer, who scored. Porter failed with tho kick: -• Sehvyn,' 5; Wellington, 3. Shortly iifter Clifton, who was playing well for Sehvyn in tho forward line, received a kick above the eye, and had to retire.' llis place was taken by Taylor. The spell came with Wellington well in tho Sehvyn twenty-five. ■ Curing the second half Wollington certainly played the better' game, but lack of training undoubtedly accounted for their weak back work. Nevertheless they kept Sehvyn. busy all through. From a scrum in. Selwyn's tweuty-fiv? Porter secured the . ball, and kicked as ho was collared.. This was neatly marked by Jlalin, who checked tho Yellows' heavy forward rush.: Do Castro, however, caught Malin's kiclr, and again gave Wellington a clianco to score, but tho Greens wore tackling effectively, liiglit up to time play was of a very disorganised order, although Selwy'n • went very closo .to scoring on one occasion when Wellington IVol ' e compelled to force down. Jlalin played wel(;for the Greene, and Packer; Porter, Brookes, and M'Phee did' excellent work for A Veilington.. "The game ended with tho scores: Sehvyn, 5; Wellington, 3. Mr./H. Paiou controlled tho game. Junior. A very willing gamo- was fought out on No. 1 ground, Athlelic Park, on Saturday .between - Itutt. <ind Berhampore juniors. :.'fho pace was a."cracker" the whole way through, and both teams were fairly evenly -matched. -Hutt .wero victorious by 3 points to nil, but Berhamporo undoubtedly, had hard luck in not being able to secure any points. Several'times they-went: close to scoring, but they could not strike home at tho vital moment. On the other baud, Hntt should havo won by more than three points. They threw away at least two tries, one of. which looked like being a certainly. Had an attempt: been made to hold oil to the biill instead of throwing it about, this try could- have- been obtained easily. ' Both sides possessed good forwards,, and the backs did not;fail to take advantage of every opportunity to make the game opeii. Hutt's try iwas scored iii the first spell' by 'Kennedy after a .fast bit of play. Grierson failed to.
