Mr. i\ J. iirooker (president) extended a very cordial welcome to the visitors, for whom Mr. Purchas (captain) responded. A prompt start mis made witli the play. When 'all the games were accounted for it was found that Newtown held a three-point advantage (7 games to i). The game at board 1 between I'urchas ami James, the .respective club champions, was marked incompleto when the railway timetable imposed a cessation of hostilities. As, however, Mr. James had made tho niost of a slight positional advautage, and won a minor pieca in the mid-game, Mr. Purchas iesigned \vithout further play. South Club had been formed eight years earlier, .tho matches in 1914/11)15, and 191G were won. comfortably by tho latter team, as was only to be expected in the circumstances. In 1917 tho xVgaio Club succeeded in drawing the first contest, and very nearly drew tho second. Last year's honours were divided, eacn club winning one match. The Ngaio Club hopes to have tho services of Air. G. A. Jones, the Alasterton champion, when tho return match is played later in the season.
