The Minister of Internal Affairs infoimed o reporter that the term of the High Commissioner's (Sir 'ihomas Mackenzie) appointment had been renewed by Cabinet for a further four months from June 22. "It might appear that there was some political or other influence in„ regard to the period for which the reappointment has been mode, said Jlr. Russell, "but this is not the ease. When Sir Thomas Mackenzie was first appointed High Commissioner it was for' a period of three years. At the end or that time, when question of his reappointment came up, Sir Thomas Mackenzie informed the Government that lis was only prepared to accept reappointment ou the understanding that lie was to be entitled at any time to give four months' notico to vacate his ofkee. Consequently it, could not be expected that the Government would bind itself to an appointment for a. long period Thomas was freo to Aueato office on four Months' notioe, hence all reappointments since then had been for. four months. "No 'doubt," added Mr., tho matter will come under reviow when the leaders, of the Government return, as probably they will have fonsulted hir Thomas Mackenzie as to his wishes in the matter."
