PENSIONS FOR MOTHERS
LABOUR SCHEME PROPOSED IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. In the House of Commons' recently Mr. Tyson Wilson (Labour, West Houston) called attention to the question of pensions, for mothers, and moved: That, in the opinion of/this House pensions adequate for a healthy and . . useful life should bo paid to all iwidows with children, or mothers whoso family breadwinner has become incapacitated, such pensions to bo provided by the State and administered by a committee of the municipal or county council, wholly unconnected with the- poor la.w. The system," he. said, was already in operation in.the United States. An estimate of the cost in this country put the amount, at. ,£20,000,000, but against that they had to put-the saving in the local rates.
Major Mot, for the Government, expressed sympathy with tho general principle of the Labour Party's motion, but showed, that there were difficulties in the way of its application. It was, however, a. problem that ought to Iμ dealt with, and he promised that it should receive attention machinery of the o":d poor-law administration was beingjirokcn up. Mr. Adamson was, well warranted in saying that the debate would carry a message of hope into many a home.
