As a matter of fact, t-lie steamer is en routo frum Melbourne to Sydney. l The Port Pirie is outward bound from London for Melbourne, Sydney, Aucklaud, Napier, and Wellington. On completion of discharge of inward oarso she will go to the Homeward loading berth in Now Zealand, sailing in the middle of July, via Panama, for London. A SMART PASSAGE. . The lietcli liira arrived at Auckland from Haapai on Tuesday afternoon, and berthed to discharge her cargo of copra. She made a quick passage on both the outward and return journey. She left Auckland on May 6, and six days later sighted Tonga, but when within thirty miles of Haapai was delayed for live days by head windß, and finally dropped anchor lirteen days out. The Union 'Company advises that its new cargo-carrier, which has been named the Kahrami, and'which, was purchased for the coastal and intercolonial trade, in nearing completion, and it is expected that sho will roach the Dominion towardß tho end of the year. THE GLADBROOK. , The head office of tho Union Company has received advice that the sailer uiatlbrook, 58 days out from San F'ancisco, readied Sydney on Tuesday morning. The Gladbrook, is will be remembered, was refitted at Port Chalmers for the Onion Company. NIUE ISLAND SERVICE. It is reported from Auckland that the Scales Uetch Rira has been chartered by F. W. Titling to. continuo the service between Auckland and Nine Island, this communication having been broken by the loss of the-Awanui. Tho Eira is expected to make four trips before the end of tho year, and is timed to leave'on the first on June 23. Sho has accommodation for eight passengers. TERPSICHORE OX THE SLIP. The full-rigged ship Terpsichore was taken from her berth at the Queen's' Wharf yesterday morning to tho Patent Slip for overhaul. The slipping of the ship was not without difficulties, and the assistance of three tugs w;ib required. The Terpsichore is not the biggest ship that Jias yet occupied the slip, her tonnago being 2025 tons, as against tho 2842 tons of tho John Ena, which went on the slip after meeting with a mishap whilst entering tho heads two years ago this month. ' . /WAIPORI FOR SYDNEY, The Waipori, which was to have left Lyttclton to-morrow for Sydney, iB now to como to Wellington. Tho 6haw J Savill liner Raranga is. to leave Qisborne about Saturday night for Wellington, and it is expected that she will got" away, from this port for London on Thursday next. THE SHROPSHIRE. Ora, which has beon waiting outside Wanganui for some days for the weather to moderate to permit of her continuing her loading operations there, was ordered yesterday to proceed to Wellington, where she is due to-day. The Kin Ora will complete her Homeward loading her.e, and sail Anally foi/&ondon about next Wednesday. NGATOItO AND NGAHERE. The Ngatoro is to leave Greyinouth tomorrow for Wellington. At this port she will coal the' Devon. The Ngahere is to leave Groymouth on Monday, and will, on arrival here, bunker the Remucra. THE PORT OHALMEIiS. ■The Port Chalmers, from New York, is due at Auckland about Juno IV. She will call at' Wellington, and from here go on to Melbourne and Sydney. Messrs. W. M. liannatyne and Co., Ltd., will act as licr agents at this, port. THE ARAWA. The Arawa was loading general cargo at Port Chalmers yesterday, and Is to leave that port to-dny for Timaru to load meat. She should arrivo here about Wednesday or Thursday from Timaru to complete.- Her dato of departure for London is now given as noon on June 24. TJNIO?( OOiIPANT'S NEW STEAMER. Tho Union Steam Ship Company has placed an order for the construction of a larco mail and passenger vessel, wliicli it is intended should be placed in the Yancouvor-Auckland-Sydney running, in conjunction with tho Niagara. The name of the builder has not yet been announced, but it is probable that the ntiw steamer will be built by one of tho large Clyde shipbuilding firms. She will, be similar in construction to the Avenger, which was lost in tho North Sea, and will havo a gross register of about. 15,000 tons. The vessel will be fitted with oilburning furnaces as well as ordinary furnaces for coal consumption. It is not certain when the new vessel will he completed, as tho conditions concerning shipbuilding at Home aro somewhat uncertain. i THE TAHITI. Advice haß been received that the Tahiti, with a draft of returning troops, left London on May 24 for New Zealand. It is probable that she will' mako Auckland her first port of call. She should arrive there about July 14. THE CARPENTARIA. ' WAIMEA'S SAILING DELAYED. Owing to being bar-bound at Wanganui, as a result of tho westerly gale, the Waiinca will not get away for Nelson and the West Coast before Saturday at noon, , , The following vessels were expected to bo. within wireless range of Auckland last night:— I Tarawera, Navua, Kaituna, 1 Korornlko, Mokoia, Fiona, and Itakanoa. The coastal steamers Wakatu and Manaroa aro still undergoing overhaul at Lyttelton, the former on the slip and the latter at tho lower breastwork, but up to the present no information Is available as to the probable dates of completion of the vessels. Tho Huddai't-Parkcr steamer Riverina was engaged in the Sydney-Itobart servioe up till tlie middle of May. The Waimakariri Harbour Board and members of tho Harbour Improvement Committee of the Kaiapoi branch of tho Canterbury I'rogresß League met recently, and discussed tlio possibilities of the Waimakariri lliver. A committee was appointed to draw up a detailed report, to bo presented to tlio executive committeo of the Canterbury Progress League on tho advantages to be gained by opening up the rivor as a port at Kaiapoi at 1 an estimated cost of £32,000.
