GISBORNE STEEPLECHASE MEETING DIAVOLO WINS THE BIG STETPLECHASE. ' . By Telegraph-Special Correspondent. Gisborne, June 12.| The Gisborne Meeting opened in glorious weather. The steeplechases wcr.o tame, but the flat races were most interesting, and close finishes were tho order of Hie day. Tho totalisator re-ceipts-amounted to 416,987. compared with ,613,30b on the first day last jeal'. There were only three runners in the Park Hurdles Handciap of two miles, and the Great Northern winner Cynic was made a strong favourite. Bjorneborg made play for a mile mid a half at n crawling pace, when the two closed up. A furlong further Bjornobtfrg was chopped out, and the other pair ran together to the lust fence. In a good finish Multive beat tho favourite by a head, with Bjorneborg ten lengths away. -An inquiry wns heldinto the bumping of Bjorneborg, but it was deemed to be accidental. There was a big field in the Maiden Race, and the public fancied Demonstrate, Auata, and Boggits. From a good start the first-named led Anata and Glengyle into the straijht. Here Anata ran wide, and Demonstrate won easily from Glengyle. Anata was close up, and then came Multilla, Nick's Head, av.d Boggits. Rotata was left at the post. Gazique, Black Lace, and Actifid was the order of favouritism for the Plying Handicap. The last-named, who had Deeley in the saddle, jumped in front, and with Happy Valley she carried on the running from Gazique and Black Lace. Happy Valley fell back entering the straight, where Gazique challenge:; Aetified, but in a great fiuish the lop weight- was beaten by a head. Black Lace was two lengths away, and then came Happy Valley. After going a furlong Orawia and Yankeeland fell. The latter "broke a leg and had to be destroyed. R. Olive had his collar-bone broken. Only four saddled up fov tho Gisborne Steeplechase. Diavolo, who stripped very well, was made favourite, but there was little to choose between the other trio. Diavolo set a good pace, and jumped well throughout. Jtle was not headed on the journey, and he won by four lengths from while Aurore, who 6topped badly in the Inst half-mile, was 100 yards away. ' Merry Jack fell at tho stonewall in the first) round. Ho was very lame on coining back, to the birdcage, and Peneton was also showing signs of soreness. Aire was withdrawn' from the Hack Flat Handicap, leaving a field of thirteen runners. Sabine was a good favourite, with Ohoreka and Tieki well backed. At the start Ohoreka look charge, and lie and Pavilion led into the straight. Then Piddlestring and Orateur joined in, and after a great battle over the final furlong Fiddlestring. won by a head from ,Orateur, with Pavilion tho same djstanco away. Ohoreka was close up. .Oraleur kadio cover a bit of extra ground on the homo turn, otherwise ho would have 'won. « , . < Multum was a hot-favourite in a iiold of five for the Tramway Hack Steeplechase. He at no time looked liku a winner, and was very tired when he fell n't the last fence. Brunswick led tho whole way, and, giving a perfect exhibition of jumping, he was never headed. Juan fell two fences from home, and Multum and Rerekohu came down at the last fe,uce. High Step was a long way back in second place. The winner gave an exhibition good enough to entitle him to race in better company. Gazique and Sir Ralph were the lavourites in the Winter Oats, and after a very' close finish they crossed the lino i together, the top weight getting tho ver- ! diet by a head. Hythread was a fair I third. Chillies. and' Crosswords made play into tho .straight, where the two favourites took, charge, and tile finish 'resulted ns aboye. RESULTS.
