Devereux has been appointed District Manner of the Public Trust Office at. Blenheim. Mr. W. A. Beddoe, Canadian Trad* Commissioner for New Zealand, will leave on a visit to Canada, by the Niagntn. Mr. Beddoe, who will be accompanied by Mrs, Beddoe, expects to be absent from Auckland for about four months. Mr. L. Birks, Chief Electrical Engineer to the Government of New Zealand, has been appointed a member of the Board of Examiners under the Inspection of Machinery Act, in the place of -Mr. Evan Parry, resigned. Major P. H. Buck, D.5.0., has been appointed a member of the Auckland Repatriation Board, as a Maori representative. The appointment of Mr. R. G. Poulton as Registrar of Electors for Wellington North is gazetted. Mr. Herbert Williams has been appointed Chief Accountant of the New Zealand Railways. Constable F. Harrison, who has beef, stationed in Wellington" for the past six years, has received notice of his- transfer to Nelson. Mr. J. R. Fairbairn, who has been connected with the Victoria. Insurance Company for over 20 years, severed his con-, nection with the firm on Saturday Inst to enter into business on his own account. Maiden, of Morrinsville, has accepted the pastorate of the Esk Baptist Church, Invercargill, to relieve the Rev. H. B.' Hughes, who is taking up tho position of organiser of the No-License Party in the,' Wellington district-. Mr G. R. Dansey, who is away with the Expeditionary Force, has been ap-' pointed senior clcrk at the Te Ivuifci Post Office. Mr. John Milne, a pioneer of 'the Wellington province, died on Wednesday morning at the age of 83 yeare. He landed at Petoue in l&iO with his parents, and', lived there for many .years. Afterwards he took up farmins both i.t Bonny Glen, Marlon, and at Waverlev. He spent the latter part of his life m Wellington. ITe leaves a wife and family of four-Mr. Lewis Milne. • Mr. Charles Hill, one of the oldest and best known of Wellington settlers, celebrated his eighty-seventh birthday yesterday, and received the congratulations of many of his friends, far and wide. Last evening, his home,' "To Hiwi, at Island Bay, was visited by several members of the Te Hiwi Bowline Club (who are privileged t'o use Mr. Hill's green), and in the course of a very Jiappy social' evening Mr. Hill was presented by Mr. j. J. Roberts, on behalf of the club, with a highly appropriate present in the form of an electric radiator, the heater being accompanied with the wish that he may long be spared to use it. 'lhe health of Mr. HilU was enthusiastically drunk, and other toasts and musical numbers marked a very jolly evening.

When tho company acquired steamers, he took com-, •mand of the old Matatua, and afterwards transferred to the old Mamari. Twenty years ago, on the death of Captain 11. Anderson, he succeeded him to the position of marine superintendent to tlie company in the South Island. The deceased was about 74- years of age, and was born in Kincardineshire, Scotland.He leaves a wife, two daughters, and two sons, one of whom has just returned from the front.

Mr. Thomas Brown, one of the founders of' the Dunedin firm of Brown, Ewing und Co., has died at Timaru, of pneumonia, following a chill contracted while on a motoring tour. Mr. Brown was born at Wooller, Northumberland, on May !), IS4o,served ail apprenticeship to thn soft gooSs trade at Borivick-on-Tweed, and came out 'to BlitlF by the ship Sir William Eyre in 18C3. At jnvercargill lie joined .Mr. Henry Reedin the business of a general store, and 111 1865 lie went to Bunpilin and became a partner with Mr. Ralph liwing in the business which lias become known throughout Otago and further afield. In 1593, Mr. Ewing withdrew, leaving Mr. Brown the Bole proprietor. 'Tn 1902 the business was turned into a company, with Mr. Brown as chairman of directors, a position which he held to the day of his death; He eat on Hip Mornington Borough Council and held the Mayoralty for one term.
